First Lt. John M. Runkle Jr. 27 of West Salem was killed Thursday May 26 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device as part of Operations Enduring Freedom.

Funeral services will be Wednesday June 8, 2011   at 4:00 p.m. at Northwestern High School Gym, 7473 North Elyria Road, West Salem, Ohio with Pastor Bradley Kelley officiating. Burial will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.  Friends will be received at the Tuesday 1:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00    at the Matteson Funeral Home, 40 Congress Street, West Salem, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be given to Wounded Warrior Project National Processing Center, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas  66675-8516,
USO for Northern Ohio, 20637 Emerald Parkway, Cleveland, Ohio  44135 or at any of The Farmer State Banks where a memorial fund has been established in his name.

John was born April 9, 1984 in Medina the son of John & Christine (Root) Runkle Sr.
He graduated in 2002 from Northwestern High school and joined the Army.
In 2004-2005 he did a tour in Iraq.  In 2009 he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point.  In 2010 he graduated from Ranger School and earned the Ranger Tab.  He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, an Army Achievement Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, an Air Assault Badge, Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge and Ranger Tab.

He is a member of James Stevenson American Post 499 of West Salem, Grace Brethren Church in Homerville and the Screaming Eagles.
His is survived by his father John M. Runkle Sr of Wooster, mother Christine Runkle of West Salem, a sister Jana (Chase) Holcomb of Cape Coral, Florida, two brothers Cory and Brent Runkle of West Salem, maternal grandmother Patricia Root of Spencer and a niece Kadence Holcomb.

His grandparents Ralph and Marion Runkle and Eugene Root died previously.
