Donald Bates Obituary

Donald H. Bates, 82 of West Salem died Tuesday August 2, 2022 at Medina Hospital.

Don was born May 22, 1940 in Cambridge, Ohio the son of Harold and Isabelle (Sherrard) Bates.

He retired from Ohio Operating Engineers where Don was a heavy equipment operator.

Don coached softball and little league when his children were young.

Don was a former West Salem Police Chief and served on the Board of Public Affairs.

He was a member of the Creston Moose Lodge. Don and his wife Bev enjoyed playing Bingo and traveling to Laughlin, Nevada

Don is survived by his wife; Beverly (Johnson) Bates of 57 years, children; Brian Bates, Jim (LInda) Bates, Donnie Bates and Stacey Carr; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and half siblings; Ruth Ann Thomas, Leslie Bates, Dorothy Barbe, Betty Carter and Dean Bates.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law; Charlie Carr and siblings; Glen Bates, JoAnne Blair and Reta Miller.

A Memorial Visitation will be on Tuesday August 9th, 2022 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem, Ohio. Burial will be at West Salem Cemetery.
