Betty Hummel Obituary

Betty Lou (Allgire) Hummel left her earthly home in Lodi, Ohio to be welcomed home into the presence of her Lord and Savior on October 19, 2021.  She is whole and at peace in Heaven after a 15 year long decline from dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.

Betty was born in New London, Huron County, Ohio on October 13, 1937 to Edward and Sadie (Day) Allgire. Throughout her childhood she lived in New London, Shiloh, and finally Sullivan.   She graduated from Sullivan High School and became Secretary to the Superintendent.  She also worked as an Elementary School Secretary, Bookkeeper, an Elementary School Tutor, a Nursing Home Activity Director and provided in-home childcare for several friends and family members children.  Betty also volunteered as an EMT for Town and Country Fire District.  She married Carl Douglas Hummel on June 30, 1957.  Together they were blessed with five children.

Living on the family farm in Homerville, Betty was no stranger to hard work.  Her life exemplified that of a Proverbs 31 woman.  She raised a large garden annually which she preserved for the coming winter.  One acre was always planted in sweet corn which she also shared and sold.  Many beautiful flowers and greenery graced the large open porch and sidewalks of the family home each year as she lovingly tended them. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting and knitting.  She made clothes for her family. Many handmade dish cloths, towels and beautiful blankets were gifts for family and friends. She enjoyed decorating her home for Christmas.

Betty, alongside her husband, was an active member of Homerville Grace Brethren Church.  She faithfully supported all areas of church ministry as a Deaconess, SMM Leader, Women's Missionary Council and Ministry Leader, helped with Vacation Bible School and hosted many missionaries and guests in her home.  She faithfully prayed for and supported both home and foreign mission efforts, taking great joy in meeting and talking with the missionaries in person whenever the opportunity arose.  Betty served on many annual mission trips to Mississauga Canada taking one of her granddaughters along to serve on her last trip.

They were also active community members.  Betty was a member of the Wadsworth Gideon International Auxiliary, Homerville and Lodi Ruritan Clubs. She was a past member of Lodi Village Council, served on the Good Samaritan Council and was a member of Ohio Activity Professionals Association.  Betty also volunteered at the Lodi Community Hospital for many years and provided budget counseling through the Medina County Extension Service.

Betty enjoyed traveling.  Many trips to visit family and friends were enjoyed to Florida, Indiana, California and Alaska.  She especially enjoyed two trips to the Holy Land, Egypt, Greece, the Netherlands and Switzerland for the Oberammergau Passion Play.  She also enjoyed many bus trips with the Wooster GBC group.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Doug on December 27, 1992, and infant daughter April Lynn on February 10, 1970.

Surviving are her son Carl Hummel of Homerville; daughters Christie (David) Rush of Villa Rica, Georgia; Kathy (Brian) Archer of Lodi, Ohio; and Mary (Matthew) Muntz of Genoa, Ohio; grandchildren Carl Hummel, Kaitlyn (Austin) Moore, Charissa Rush, Emily (Charles) Johnson, Samantha Muntz, Douglas Muntz and great grandchildren Carolyn McCulley and Eliza Johnson.  Also surviving are a sister Ruth Howell and brother Frank (Beverly) Allgire along with many nieces and nephews and their families.

The family would like to thank many friends who helped throughout Betty's journey by calling, sending cards, providing rides to church events, shared meals with her or simply visited with her faithfully.  We also thank the caring staff of Cleveland Clinic Hospice who supported us through her final days.
