Betty Hottel Obituary

Betty L Hottel, 88, of West Salem died September 21st, 2018 at West View Healthy Living. Betty was born to Arthur and Mary (Smith) Reed, January 6th, 1930. Betty graduated from Congress High School in 1948. She then went to work at Faultless Rubber Company in Ashland, Ohio.

In June 1951 she married her true love, the late Clair Hottel. During their wonderful marriage together, Betty and Clair had four children; Jerry (Karen) Hottel (Oberlin, Ohio), Andy (Pat) Hottel (Bartlett, Illinois), Cheryl (Rick) Boreman (Burbank, Ohio), Doug (Holly) Hottel (Wooster, Ohio). From their four children, they were blessed with 12 grandchildren; Brian (Ruth Ann) Hottel, Mark (Alicia) Hottel, Leah (Sean) Templeton, Ben Hottel, Justin (Kayleigh) Hottel, Robby Hottel, Mallory (Donnie) Staggs, Jordan (Sarah) Boreman, Brad (Alicia) Hottel, Zachery (Nicole) Hottel, Josh (Megan) Hottel and Hannah Hottel. Betty was also blessed with nine great grandchildren; Jack, James, Marian, Lydia, Natalie, Ansley, Micah, Lily, and the ninth is on the way. Betty also leaves behind a brother; Howard (Barbara) Reed and Sister; Marilyn (Keith) Switzer.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Clair, July 1st, 1993; Parents Arthur and Mary (Smith) Reed; Sisters, Catherine Funk, Ada Krueger, Pauline Crumley; Brothers, Ivan, Paul, Dave, Kenny, Denny Reed; and half siblings, Lawrence, Beulah, Blanche, Martha, and Helen.

While raising her four children and supporting her husband with their oil and gas business, Betty started a baking operation in 1970. She originally started baking in her kitchen, but soon migrated to the basement where two regular sized stoves, two bread tables, and a commercial sized mixer were installed. She would bake up to 200 loaves of French bread beginning on Thursday and ending Saturday morning. This migrated to dinner rolls, then to sweet rolls, adding pies, and finally cakes for various occasions, including weddings. The bread, rolls and pies were sold at the Cheese House and Fuhrman’s IGA in West Salem as well as Lodi’s grocery store.

Betty attended the Red Haw United Methodist Church until she began her residence at West View Manor. Betty loved to be active in her church. One of her greatest joys, till her final day, was to sing those familiar hymns. She sang in high school, in church choirs, and enjoyed singing during the chapel services. Her day was brightened when she could sing along with a familiar tune in her favorite part, alto. Although reading words and notes was difficult, those familiar tunes came back to her so she could enjoy them with fellow worshippers. The good Lord blessed her with a loving family and many friends who allowed her to enjoy each day God gave her.
