Suzan Mertes, 69, of Cinnamon Lake, Ohio, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2026. She leaves a legacy of kindness, generosity, and service to others. Born March 7, 1957, in Hamilton, Ohio, she was the daughter of Richard and Saundra (Schaeffer) Wiehe (both deceased). She is survived by her beloved husband of more than 42 years, Charles “Chuck” Mertes; her children, Nathan (Thu Dau Mot, Vietnam) and Zoey (Seattle, Washington); her brothers, Richard (Cathy) Wiehe of Mansfield, Ohio, and Dave (Jenny) Wiehe of Barron, Wisconsin; and her siblings-in-law, John Mertes of California, Carol (Mertes) Shaw of Michigan, and Dean Mertes of Iowa. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, a great-great-nephew, and dear friends and extended family across the country.
Suzan’s love of the water drew her and Chuck to Cinnamon Lake, where they spent countless evenings on their pontoon, enjoying the peace of the lake. She quickly became a devoted member of the community, giving generously of her time, energy, and talents. Her love of children led her to serve as Chairperson of the Events Committee, helping bring neighbors together through Morning Mug, Bingo, holiday celebrations, and other gatherings. Suzan’s creativity shone in the flyers she designed and shared online. Her generosity was felt in the quiet, steady ways she showed up whenever someone needed a hand. She had a gift for making people feel welcome and included; if you met Suzan, you likely left with a smile—whether from her warm greeting or a thoughtful check-in. Her beautiful smile and steady kindness will be missed beyond words.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Cinnamon Lake Lodge on May 3, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Flowers may be delivered to: Barnosky residence, 2111 Tarragon Dr., West Salem Oh. 44287
