Lonnie “Scott” Mendenhall, age77, passed away June12, 2025, at Life Care Hospice of Wooster, OH. Scott was born December 30, 1947, in Lodi, Ohio, to Hobert J. and Ida May (Finley) Mendenhall, the first of their seven children. Scott grew up in Congress and attended Northwestern Schools. He graduated in 1965, then pursued his college education at Ohio University in Athens, majoring in science education. An educator known for his kindness and humor, many students were blessed to have had Scott as their science teacher or guidance counselor at Ashland Junior High, where he spent most of his career. Scott received the “Teacher of the Year” award from Ashland City Schools in 1983. He retired in 2000. Scott made many life-long friendships with fellow staff members over those years. In recent years, he enjoyed attending the weekly “coffee club” with his high school classmates. On July 6, 1973, Scott married Bonnie J. Bibart, who survives. During their marriage they cared for and loved many pets. They attended many sporting events and were avid fans of the Ashland University women’s basketball program. Shopping for antiques and greenhouse visits brought them joy and exercise. Scott loved fishing trips with family and friends. He always wore a tie-dyed T-shirt, was an amazing story teller, and a great listener as well. He greeted those he loved with a “Howdy” and closed his cards with “Peace.” Scott is preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law, foster brother, Carl Arman, and nephew, Eric Mendenhall-Stone. Surviving Scott are: brothers Mike (Char) Mendenhall, Rick (Barb) Mendenhall, Keith (Kara) Mendenhall and Dennis (Lori) Mendenhall; sisters Susan Mendenhall and Penny Mendenhall- Stone. Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews will also be among those remembering and missing the love, joy and inspiration he bestowed upon us. Matteson Funeral Home, West Salem, is assisting the family. A private family service will be held. Burial will be at Congress Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to: The Wayne Co.
