Robert Spring

Robert Spring passed away on Oct. 3, 2013, after a long illness. He lived a long and fulfilled life, and was much loved.
He was born Nov. 27, 1925, in Coventry, to Clarence and Frieda (Maxenberg) Spring and was the last survivor of seven siblings. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II after enlisting at the age of 17 with permission of his parents. He was decorated five times including once for heroism, before receiving an honorable discharge.
He then attended Ashland University, while working full time, and received his bachelor of science degree in education in 1956. He received his master of science degree in education from Wittenberg University also while working full time and raising a family in 1965.
He worked various positions in several educational systems during his career, including high school teacher, guidance counselor and principal until his retirement.
He married Dorothy Jean Grumbling on Aug. 17, 1957 by whom he is survived. They had four children and he is survived by Bobbi, Curt (Lori) and Marlene (Michael). He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy. He is also survived by grandchildren, Nicholas, (Christine), Heidi, Hope (Brian), Jesselyn, Holly, Adam and Heather, as well as great grandchildren, Autumn, Melody, Brady, Mason and Hudson.
Services will be Tuesday, Oct 8 at 11 a.m. at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem with Pastor Brad Ingram officiating. Burial will be in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman.
