Robert Eugene Smith

August 16, 1939 — March 24, 2019

Robert Eugene Smith, 79 of West Salem died Sunday March 24, 2019 at Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights.

Bob was born August 16, 1939 in Wooster the son of Charles and Mabel (Porter) Smith. He graduated in 1957  which was the first class to graduate from Northwestern High School. He married Judith (Osborn )Smith in 1958. She survives.

Bob served in the US Navy from 1958 to 1962. He retired from Smithville Manufacturing Company in Wooster where he was a machinist. He was a member of the James Stevenson American Post 499 of West Salem.  Bob was an avid Ohio State and Indians fan, played and coached fast pitch softball and enjoyed traveling with his wife Judy.

He is survived by his wife, children, Brenda (Don) Cherry, Jeff (Teresa) Smith, Todd (Debbie) Smith and Julie Sheridan, 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, sisters, Delores Lee and Lois (Mike) Shelly and a brother Richard (Joanne) Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, , granddaughter, Erika, brother, Charles Smith and a sister Beverlee Pavkov.

Memorial Service will be Thursday March 28, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at the Matteson Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Smith officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday March 27, 2019 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral Home.  Burial will be in West Salem Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by James Stevenson American Legion Post 499. Memorials may be given to James Stevenson American Post 499, 337 Congress Street, West Salem, Ohio  44287.  Those wishing to share a memory or make online condolences may do so by visiting mattesonfh.com.
