Pauline G (Hawkins) Moutoux

March 17, 1928 — June 4, 2025

Pauline Gay Moutoux was born on March 17, 1928 to George Everett Hawkins and Dallie (Moyers) Hawkins in Obrion, Rosedale, West Virginia. She died on June 4, 2025 at the Age of 97. Pauline was raised on her father’s farm in Rosedale, attending school there until the 8th grade. She then worked for three years to earn money so she and May could buy clothes to go to high school in Weston, WV, where her parents had purchased a second farm. This demonstrated the persistence and determination that marked her entire life.

After high school, Pauline moved to Ashland, Ohio. She worked at National Latex Company, Johnson Rubber in West Salem, Apple Creek State Hospital, and the Wooster Brush for twenty-two years. She met Merrill Lester Moutoux at National Latex and they were married on February 3, 1950. They raised five children in West Salem and Albion, Ohio. After Merrill passed away in December, 1993, Pauline married Bill Ferrell in November of 2015, but he passed less than two years later. Pauline often worked a forty-hour-a-week job, yet she often worked until midnight at home, and rise at 4 am before going to work again, taking care of her family. She modeled her life after the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31. After she retired, she became an avid quilter and always gave away her quilts to family and friends. Her quilts won many ribbons at the Wayne County Fair. In 2021, she finally won “Best in Show!” She also loved to bake sourdough bread, making 12-16 loaves per week to share with her family, neighbors and pastors’ families. Pauline was a faithful member of many churches over the years, most recently at Joy Baptist Church in Orrville, Ohio. Pauline was a committed, born-again, believer in Jesus Christ and had a deep desire for all her family and friends to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation. She was faithful in keeping her family in church as well. She prayed for her family by name every day, read through the New Testament twice and the Old Testament every year, along with the Psalms and Proverbs every month. She listened to audio tapes of the Bible while she made quilts, memorizing many passages of Scripture.

Proceeding her in death were her parents and sisters Morene May Wimer, Mary Hawkins and brothers Harvey Glen, Otis Earl, Oakley Guy, Orville Clen, and Roy Ray. She is survived by her youngest sister, Daisy Dell; her daughters Sharon Kay Gaston (Gary), Mary Lee Wilcox (Jerry, deceased), Betty Lou Moutoux; and her sons Roger Keith (Becky) and Rev. Dr. Steven Merrill (Susan). She is also survived by eight grandchildren (all married) and eighteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Pauline’s funeral service will be Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem with Rev. Dr. Steven Merrill Moutoux officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until time of the service. Burial in West Salem Cemetery.
