Mary Arlene Reed
Mary Arlene (Hines) Reed, 88, of West Salem, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Rae Ann Suburban Nursing Home in Westlake, Ohio.
Services will be Friday, May 4, at 11:00 AM at the West Salem United Methodist Church, with Pastor Patricia Lintela officiating. Burial will be at Hazzard Cemetery, West Salem.
Friends may call Thursday, May 3, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM at Matteson Funeral Home, West Salem; and one hour prior to the service at the church.

She was born on July 30, 1923, in West Salem to William Henry and Mary Catherine (Niswender) Hines and married John James Reed on August 22, 1942. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, her parents, brothers Wayne and Lloyd Hines, and sister Doris Fair.
Arlene was a 1940 high school graduate of West Salem School, and a graduate of the Mansfield School of Cosmetology. She worked as a hairdresser for 22 years. During World War II, she worked for two years at Pump Engineering Company in Cleveland. She also had been employed by the Hammond Music Studio in Medina and Wooster as an organ instructor. She retired from the US Post Office, where she worked as a part time clerk in West Salem.
Arlene was the organist and pianist for more than 30 years at the West Salem United Methodist Church, where she was a member. She also played the accordion, as well as piano and organ, for various clubs, parties, nursing homes, and church events, including weddings and funerals. For years she volunteered for the American Cancer Society, co-chaired the annual church smorgasbord and bazaar with the United Methodist Women, was a 4-H advisor, and worked for the Northwestern High School Booster Club.
With her husband, Arlene was a member of the West Salem Senior Citizens and the 50-Plus Club. They enjoyed national and international travel, gardening, music, dancing and swimming. She was also an accomplished seamstress who did sewing alterations for others and made costumes for various school activities.
She is survived by her children, James (Nikki) Reed of Avon Lake; Marilyn (Robert) Houston of Wooster; John Phillip (Diane) Reed of Medina; Margaret (Ken) Santelmann of Seville; and David Reed of Sharon Center; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Rae Ann Suburban Nursing Home and Harbinger Hospice in Westlake for the compassion and care they provided to Arlene.
