Mary Kathern Gray

Mary Kathern Gray passed away on August 31, 2026, at the age of 87.

Born on October 9, 1938, in West Union, West Virginia, Mary was the daughter of Charles and Letha (Niday) Hines. She will be remembered for the many simple and meaningful ways she shared her time and talents throughout her life. She enjoyed painting freehand oil paintings, going fishing, making quilts for others, and genealogy. These interests reflected both her creativity and her care for those around her, especially in the quilts she made and gave to others.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Gray. She was also preceded in death by her sons, Douglas Gray, Denis Caperton, Don Caperton, and Daryl Gray; by her sister, Nancy Maxine Keller; and by her brothers, Charles Edgar Hines and Victor Hines Jr and her parents.

She is survived by her daughter, Denise Miller and her husband, Ron, of Wooster; by her son, Daniel Caperton of Ashland; and by her daughter, Doris Graber and her husband, Robert, of Ashland. She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, as well as several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Her family carries forward the memory of a woman whose life touched many generations.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Matteson Funeral Home, 40 Congress Street, P.O. Box 314, West Salem, Ohio 44287. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Matteson Funeral Home, 40 Congress Street, West Salem, Ohio 44287 with Pastor Paul Bartholomew officiating. Burial will take place afterward at Mohican Church Cemetery, 7759 North Elyria Road, West Salem, Ohio 44287.

Mary Kathern Gray will be remembered with love by her family and by all who knew her. Her memory will live on in the lives she helped shape, in the family she cherished, and in the lasting gifts of care and creativity she shared so freely.
