Loretta R. Bett, 89½, Ohio Light Opera Fan

Wooster—Loretta Ruth Bett, 89 ½ years old, of  Wooster and  northern Ashland County near West Salem,  passed away with her children by her side at home in her own bed on  March 10, 2014 of complications from a cerebral hemorrhage several days after a severe fall.

Loretta Ruth Bett was born August 27, 1924, in Garfield Heights, OH, the daughter of Joseph and Sophie (nee Kumor) Gargula.  She was a child survivor of the Great Depression.   Loretta graduated from Garfield Heights High School in 1942, and was employed as a bookkeeper in Cleveland.  At the age of 22, she traveled alone out west and lived and worked in Los Angeles, California for 3 years.  On October 24, 1953, Loretta married Edwin R. Bett, who preceded her in death on January 12, 2006.    She and her family farmed and sold produce in northern Ashland County for over 50 years.

Loretta is survived by her three children, Steven T. of Ashland, Barbara J. of West Salem, and B. John (Lorie) of Mandeville, LA, one granddaughter, Erin Lorraine, and several nieces and nephews.  Her parents and her sister, Imelda Emily Buch, preceded her in death.

Loretta returned to work after her children were older and was employed for many years as a clerk at Leslie-Locke in Lodi.  She retired for the last time at the age of 85 from the College of Wooster, shortly after she received her 10-year service award. She enjoyed attending concerts and lectures at the College.   She and her family loved camping.  For many years, Loretta and Ed would travel south and west for the winter, eventually visiting most of the national parks.  They also traveled all four train routes leading to the West Coast and visited Alaska twice.   Loretta enjoyed swimming at our wonderful Wooster YMCA for more than a quarter century and she was a volunteer usher at The Ohio Light Opera in Wooster for nearly 20 years.   She attended Wooster Mennonite Church and often walked to services in good weather.

Private memorial services will be held at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem.   Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Homerville on March 11, 2014 at 11 am with Rev. Stephanie Snyder officiating.   Memorial contributions may be made to Wooster YMCA, 680 Woodland Ave, Wooster, OH  44691 or to The Ohio Light Opera, 1189 Beall Ave, Wooster, OH  44691.  Online condolences may be shared at the funeral home’s website at www.mattesonfh.com.
