Leo James Barbera, a visionary businessman, dedicated horseman, and later in life, avid golfer, passed away October 6, 2026, leaving behind a profound legacy of industry innovation and deep family devotion.
Born on October 11, 1936, in Canton, Ohio, Leo was the cherished son of the late Cono and Frances Barbera. From a young age, he exhibited the grit, determination, and intelligence that would define his remarkable life. As an entrepreneur, Leo was a true pioneer and a recognized expert in the horizontal tunneling field. He successfully owned and operated American Augers in Wooster, Ohio, as well as Horizontal Holes International/Manufacturing in Southern Pines, North Carolina, earning the respect of colleagues and competitors alike across the drilling industry.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Leo’s true passion lay in the equestrian world. An expert horse trainer, his love for the sport and dedication to the community led him to become a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association and a founding member of the National Snafflebit Association, helping shape the landscape of horse training and showing for generations to come.
Leo’s greatest pride, however, was his large and loving family. He is survived by his five children: Robin Richardson of Landrum, South Carolina; Rick Barbera and his wife, Pat, of Waveland, Mississippi; Ronda McCaskey and her husband, Jim, of Chardon, Ohio; Holly North and her husband, Cary, of Ashland, Ohio; and Casey Barbera and her husband, Michael Maness, of Seven Lakes, North Carolina. His legacy continues to bloom through his sixteen grandchildren and thirty-six great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.
Leo was proceeded in death by his wife, Marcia, his parents, his siblings, Cona, Frances, and James; his beloved son, Jimmy; and two cherished granddaughters, Jessica and Alison; as well as numerous extended family members.
His sharp mind, entrepreneurial spirit, and enduring love for his family will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A graveside service will take place at 1:00 pm on November 8, 2026, at West Salem Cemetery, West Salem, Ohio.
