Kenneth “Kenny” Ray Nichols, 87, passed away peacefully at his home on September 29, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on July 21, 1938, Kenny grew up in the Lodi area and graduated from Sullivan High School. He and his beloved wife, Janice, built a home for their family in Nova, Ohio, where they enjoyed raising their children.
Kenny retired from the automobile industry after more than 40 years of service, most of which he spent managing the Parts Department. He loved playing and watching sports, as well as attending the sporting events of his children and grandchildren. There wasn’t a sport Kenny wouldn’t try, and he loved sharing his knowledge with others. He enjoyed coaching girls’ softball in Savannah and Crestview for many years. An avid golfer, Kenny could often be found at Rolling Acres Golf Club, where he played in several leagues alongside friends he treasured.
Kenny will be dearly missed by his children, Mike (Becky) Nichols, Kris (Bruce) Sherrick, and Michelle (Jarrod) Fry; his grandchildren, Jeremy (Ikumi) Nichols, Joe (Kathleen) Nichols, Michael Nichols, Emily (Joe) Lynch, Jonathan Sherrick, Claire Sherrick, Matthew Fry, Emma Fry, and Abbie Fry; and his seven great-grandchildren, who will continue to carry on his love of sports and his legacy.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Janice (Edwards) Nichols; his parents, Louie and Ovella Nichols; his in-laws, Francis and Mildred Edwards; his brother, Carl Nichols; and brothers-in-law Duane (Nancy), Francis, and Dennis Edwards. He is survived by his brothers, Harold “Nick” Nichols, Craig (Becky) Nichols, and John (Joyce) Nichols; as well as sisters-in-law, Pat Edwards, Marcia Edwards, and Joann Neisner.
Kenny will be remembered for his contagious laugh and sense of humor. Even in his final weeks, he was teasing his family and medical team with a smile on his face.
A graveside service will be held, at a later date, for family to celebrate Kenny’s life. Friends and family who wish to send condolences may make donations to the Ashland Council on Aging – Meals on Wheels, an organization that graciously supported Kenny during his final year.
Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem is honored to serve Kenneth’s family and the community. If you would like to share a photo or memory of Kenneth with the family, please do so at mattesonfh.com.
