John M. Runkle, age 68, passed away peacefully at home and surrounded by loved ones on September 29, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. A proud Navy veteran and avid outdoorsman, John found his greatest joy in nature. Whether hunting, or camping, he cherished the beauty of the outdoors and spent countless hours enjoying it with family and friends. His love for the wilderness was infectious, and he often shared his passion through stories and adventures, creating memories that will live on with those closest to him. John's sense of humor, strength, and generosity touched the lives of everyone he met. He had a unique ability to make those around him feel seen, heard, and valued. Throughout his battle with cancer, he remained a beacon of courage and resilience, showing strength in the face of adversity.John is survived by his loving spouse, Elizabeth Runkle; his children, Jana (Chase) Holcomb, Cory (Kelsey) Runkle, and Brent (Christa) Runkle; and his six grandchildren (Kadence, Matthew, Pierce, Liam, Leighton, and Ellia). He also leaves behind his sisters (Marsha, Susan, JoAnne, Jill, and Renae), He was predeceased by his son, 1st Lt. John M. Runkle Jr; parents, Ralph and Marian; and sister, Janet.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A celebration of John’s life will take place at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem, Ohio on Friday October 4, 2024 @ 11:00 a.m. Burial with military rites will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville, Ohio.
