Max Mendez, age 13, of West Salem, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on May 12, 2025. Born on February 15, 2012, Max was a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew him. His kindness, compassion, and vibrant spirit made him a true friend to all. Max was the beloved son of Saul and Leah Mendez and the proud big brother of Sam. He is also survived by his loving grandparents Jerry and Rita Flinn, and Pascual Mendez and Isabel Carmona. He was dearly loved by his uncles Brady and Brandon Flinn, and his aunts Lucia and Nallely Mendez. Max was also a beloved cousin to Koen, Andrew, Axel, Lizeth, and Mariel.
He was a student at Northwestern Local Schools, where he was actively involved in band and wrestling. He had a deep love for history and science—especially physics and engineering—and often amazed those around him with his curiosity and thoughtfulness. He enjoyed CrossFit and playing drums on the worship team at Mohican Church. He was also involved in the church’s youth group and had dreams of becoming an Air Force pilot. He will be remembered for his helpfulness, his smile, and the way he made everyone feel seen and valued. His incredible hair was a legendary reflection of the spirit and style that made Max so uniquely himself.
He is preceded in death by his great-grandfathers Max Flinn and Ronald Reed, and his great-grandmother Lois Flinn. Though his time with us was far too short, his impact will live on through all who loved him. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, May 18, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at West Hill Baptist Church in Wooster. A funeral service to honor Max’s life will take place at the same location on Monday, May 19, at 11:00 AM.
