Retired SSG.Vernon D. Johnson passed away suddenly in his home in Nova, Oh on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019 at age 81.
He was born April 10, 1937 to Arthur and Rose P. (Brazzo) Johnson in Wakefield, Michigan.
He served in the U.S. Army from July 1959 to Aug. 1978. He was deployed overseas in Vietnam, Germany and Korea during his time of service. He delighted in being outdoors, campfires and westerns. He especially enjoyed watching his great-granddaughter Hana Wagner perform in the 4-H western competition horse shows. He also appreciated the company of the girls at Callahan’s Corner Store in Nova, Oh. while having his morning coffee.
Vernon is survived by his children, Rosemarie (John) Dickens of West Salem, OH, William Johnson of West Palm Beach, FL., Patricia Wasielewski of Wakefield, MI., and Raymond (Michelle) Johnson of Brainerd, MN. He had 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Waltraud (Liz) Johnson (Holzmann), stepson Hienz J. Guth, brother Richard, sister Vera, and his parents.
Matteson Funeral Home of West Salem, OH is assisting the family with arrangements. After the cremation Vernon’s remains along with his wife Waltraud (Liz) will rest in peace at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery located in Seville, OH.
