Martha D (Strait) Spidel

Martha Diane Strait Spidel passed away into the arms of her loving savior, Jesus Christ, on May 26, 2018. Martha (Marty, Mommy, Amma, Grandma) was born on July 3, 1944 in Bath, New York. She received an R. N. degree in nursing from Corning Community College in Corning, New York.  Martha put herself through nursing school by working as a line worker packaging cookies at Archway Cookie Factory, working long hours until she achieved her dream of becoming a nurse. She enjoyed all aspects of nursing, with the humble goal of helping the ill and “putting a smile where there once was a tear.” Martha was Director of Nursing at Pythian Sisters in Medina, Ohio.

She worked on the farm with her husband, Marvin Spidel, in West Salem, Ohio. She enjoyed music, dancing, reading, rain storms, flowers, and sitting on the porch watching and listening to the birds. But Martha’s greatest joy was spending time with her family. Martha is survived by daughters Christina (Greg) DiLeo, Nikki (Bill) Blicha, Grand children Brittany (James) Thibodaux Jr., Katherine DiLeo and Billy and Jessica Blicha; special children Sandra Wood (Bill) Kufner, Mike (Kathy) Wood, John (Phoebe) Spidel, Marva (Keith) Odren, Ted (Cindy) Spidel, Fawn (Marty) Ryan, Jill (Dave) Chance, and 28 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; brothers Tom (Janet) Crane and Mike (Jodi) Crane; sisters Betty (Terry) Llewelyn, Sally (Sonny) Sutton, Linda (John) Addacchio, Kay (Ken) Ayers, and Nora Darcangelo; many nieces, nephews and cousins. One Uncle Mike (Freda) Crane and Aunts Grace Walther, Gen Crane and Lucy Crane. She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin Spidel, her parents and 2 sisters, Rita and Dorothy. After her diagnosis she wrote, “I have no yesterdays-time took them away. Tomorrow may not be, but I have today!”

Funeral Service will be Thursday May 31, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem with Pastor Beryl Baum officiating.  Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday evening 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  Burial in West Salem Cemetery.  Memorial may be given to LifeCare Hospice, 1900 Akron Rd, Wooster, OH 44691.Online condolences may be left for the family at mattesonfh.com
