David Eugene Knight, 91, of West Salem, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Sunday,
December 4, at Life Care Hospice in Wooster. A memorial service will be held at Congress
Community Church, 10691 Franchester Road (Congress Village) on Sunday, December 11th
at 3:00, with Pastor Chris Cottrel officiating. Also on Sunday, Dec. 11th, in lieu of calling
hours, a reception will be held at Congress Community Church Fellowship Hall following the
service for friends and family. A private family burial is planned. Matteson Funeral Home is
assisting the family and online condolences may be made at the funeral home's website at
mattesonfh.com. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Congress
Community Church, Town & Country Fire Department in West Salem, or Wayne County
Hospice.

Surviving are children: Ruth Ann (Chet) Martin, David (Sue) Knight, Stephen (Patricia)
Knight, and Mid (Roger) White; grandchildren: Jen (David) Walton, Andrew (Holly) Knight,
Chelsea (Josh) Diehl, Kate (Adam) Harbaugh, DayeAnn (Patrick) Walden, Ben (Laura)
Harbaugh, Becca Harbaugh; step-grandchildren: Tabby (Joe) Becerra, and Tyler White; and
10 great grandchildren.

David Knight was born April 4, 1925, to Prof. Lyman C. and Maud Marvin Knight. He
married Ruth Ferguson on June 16, 1946, and she preceded him from this life on earth in
2008. Also preceding him were his 4 siblings: Harriet Knight, Coleman Knight, William Knight,
and Ann Kittle.

He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater. After the war he graduated from The
College of Wooster where he played football. He received his Masters in Education from
Kent State University. As a teacher, administrator, and coach, he worked at Bellville High
School, Orrville City Schools, Ashland University, and Northwestern Local Schools where he
later was a Hall of Honor Award recipient.

He was active in his community and served as Congress Township Trustee, Town and
Country Fire Board, Congress Cemetery Board, and a member of Congress Community
Church. Always generous with his time and resources, he loved to be outdoors working on
fun family projects. Over the years he taught hundreds of kids how to water ski on his pond
and continued to ski himself until the age of 80. He had an impact on many students and
staff after 35 years in education.

He will be remembered as a faithful follower of Christ, a devoted husband, father, and
grandfather. What feels like the end of something great is really the start of something even
better ... eternal life with Jesus.
