Alene (Bowman) Smith

 

 

Alene Smith nee Bowman, born February 26, 1922, Perry, GA; died August 20, 2016, at Brookdale Medina South Assisted Living Facility, Medina, Oh, after a long illness. She had lived 94 yrs. at death. Born in Perry Ga, oldest of six children, her family moved back to Cleveland Oh when she was five years old.  Eventually the family moved to North Ridgeville.

Alene met her husband Ray when she was 15 years old at a dance in North Ridgeville and they married March of 1942 and shared 72 years as a devoted couple. They lived on Beebe St in Elyria until 2003. For 33 years Alene was an assembler and inspector for Bendix Air Brakes. She retired in 1981. In 1970, Alene and Ray became Roman Catholic. They became active members of St Jude Roman Catholic Church, and were Elyria Catholic High Boosters.  Alene was also active in Women's Senior Fellowship,  the American Legion Post 12 Ladies Auxiliary, and the Elyria VFW Auxiliary.  Alene volunteered as a greeter at the Methodist Home in Elyria. She and Ray were involved with an antique car club and traveled extensively throughout Ohio and the surrounding states.  Alene's first love was dancing. She and Ray would go out most every weekend wherever they were.  Alene also enjoyed water exercises, jewelry and perfume. They moved in with their Son in Homerville in 2003 because of Ray's health. They joined St Stephen Roman Catholic Church in West Salem, and remained active in social functions of both communities.  Alene and Ray were members of the Homerville Ruritans.  In Dec 2009, Alene and Ray moved into Emeritus Assisted Living Facility (Now Brookdale South).

Alene was proceeded in death by her husband of 72 years Raymond L Smith, originally of Elyria, latter years at Brookdale South until his death April 1, 2014; her father Warren Bowman of Perry, Ga, latter years from North Ridgeville, Oh; her mother: Crescentia (Tinnie) Walburga Rose Bowman nee Loescher of North Ridgeville ,Oh; her brothers Herman Neal Bowman (Irene); Donald Paul Bowman (Toshiko); Arthur Warren Bowmen (Fay); Norman Harold Bowman (Donna); her sister Florence C. Bowman who lived 9 days in 1927.

Alene is survived by her daughter Donna Rae Neuberger (Donald) Brunswick, Oh; son Larry Dean Smith (Joyce) Homerville, Oh; five Grandchildren and seven Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will be Sat Aug 27, 2016 at 10:00am at St Stephen Catholic Church, 44 Britton St., West Salem, Oh 44287, with Fr Stock officiating.  Friends will be received at the Matteson Funeral home in West Salem on Friday 4 – 8 pm.
